Three Wishes for Our Aprils

Last Slice of the March Challenge - A final "3" post: Three Wishes for Our Aprils

1. That we continue to Slice - I have felt re-energized by this writing, by reading comments, by reading your posts and by writing you comments. I hope you'll keep Slicing. I hope I will keep Slicing. Tuesdays are a good day to be a writer, right?

2. That our world values small moments, for us and for our profession, and for our students - I know that April and May represent testing months for so many of us, when there is far less "tell me about you" and far more stilted, overly structured, high stakes writing without community, without feedback. I know many folks are finding ways to share testing as a genre, and tackling it with positivity and care for young voices. (Thank you, thank you!) And I hope we can all find ways to support teachers as writers, students as writers, who are telling their own stories, sharing their own ideas, centering their truths. Our world desperately needs this content, and I will continue to think how about I can center small moments in my own work.

3. That our community grows - I'm already plotting who I can invite into this space, even if it means they might find my site (yikes!). I read about some of you Slicing as a school community, and Slicing with your own children (not your students - your actual adult kids!). Yes to that energy, and yes to more practicing writers in our world. I made an invite list, and I need to take the next steps to share the Slicing opportunity, despite my apprehensions. Living a writing life might be even better if I had a few Slicing friends in real life 🧡.

In a few hours, I'm hopping on a plane to Switzerland to ride a train through a magical route (Zermatt to St. Moritz!). Then we're heading to Vienna to be with my daughter as she runs her first marathon (what a kid!). I have my writers notebook, my calendar invite, and my good intentions. Hope to see you on Tuesdays, Slicing friends. Thank you, thank you for an incredible month.

My Google calendar for 4/1!

  1. Tuesdays are a fantastic day to write—especially if you write on Sunday for Tuesday. I’d love to hear all about your Switzerland trip. We’re headed to Egypt at the beginning of May w/ a side trip to France on the way. I’m sure I’ll write about the trip. I cherish this community. It has kept me writing as a retired person. I hope some of your colleagues join us.

  9. Thank you for your slice, celebrating slicing. There are so many positives to writing and you share them here. This moved me:
"And I hope we can all find ways to support teachers as writers, students as writers, who are telling their own stories, sharing their own ideas, centering their truths. " Thank you

  11. Have a wonderful trip -- that sounds amazing. I, too, have found this month wonderful and want to invite others to join. Reading about people's lives in written form (instead of Insta pics) is SO delightful and life affirming. I hope I keep up with Tuesday slices!
