Mary Oliver inspires

I have been reading this poem like a daily prayer.
This week, I'm far from my book, and regret not bringing the poetry anthology with me, so I can touch each word as I read, sliding my finger along, a reminder of how important the message is, a reminder to be open to the joy.
This morning, as the light seeps into the gray morning, I read it aloud, touching each word with my eyes and voice instead of my finger, giving in to the joy that is poetry, that is this poem, that is the potential of this day.

Small note: I first read this poem on the Poetry Is Not a Luxury Instagram; even though I own Mary Oliver's Devotions, I'd never rested on it there.

  2. Lisa, your teaser invited me here today! What a beautiful and peaceful poem. Here's to joy. "Joy is not made to be a crumb" is a favorite Oliver line of mine.

    1. Isn't Mary Oliver the best? I could Slice about her every day. (And I really need her wisdom these days.)

  3. Mary Oliver is the voice we need to hear. This is a poem of hers that I've seen lately more than I used to; it is perfect for these times. I love these words: "touching each word with my eyes and voice." The words of hers that echo always? "What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" "feel joy, don't hesitate." They work together, don't they?

    1. Yes, Patricia, I can tell you're a fan - and I love the "mash-up" of those lines, too.

  4. That is one of my favorites and in the days after my brother passed, many years ago, I read it before going to visit my bereft parents each day. It allowed me to smile and to encourage others to accept joy, again.

  5. What a treat to read! Thank you for sharing Mary Oliver's words. I also love your own words--your slice has a Mary Oliver-like quality--the way you highlight tiny details to bring them to life.

  6. I saw this on Poetry is Not a Luxury the other day & read it several times. So beautiful & I hadn't read it before, despite - like you - having Devotions (on my bedside table). Thank you for sharing.
