What did I learn

10 lessons from Slicing: March 2024, Slice 31 of 31!
This was my first complete year of Slicing, and I'm walking away with ah-has and pushes, too.

1. Writing every day is about using head and heart muscles that need a workout. I can do this!

2. Finding an image brings energy to my Slicing experience.

3. Learning from other Slice(r)s is part of the magic of the month.

4. Sometimes shorter Slices take more effort than diary-like Slices. Who knew?!

5. I can write any time of day, but it's easier when I have a few notes jotted down.

6. Comments are so motivating. I was truly bummed and less motivated on zero comment days.

7. Tulips starred in my month. Always, March tulips.

8. I really should Slice each Tuesday; the habit is formed and I've taken the ultimate step: putting it my Google Calendar!

9. The ideas for writing keep growing; it makes me hopeful for ongoing Slicing.

10. Admitting that I still haven't shared my writing beyond the Slicing community - that's something for me to explore, isn't it?

  1. Congratulations on your first complete month! Do join on Tuesdays! I like the simple format of your list- I always appreciate a list and may use that idea for my slice.

    1. I sometimes feel like a list is a cop-out but then realize that no matter the structure, it's helpful to read aloud, revise, tinker a bit. Yes to Tuesdays :)

  2. I remember what it was like during the first year of slicing and your lessons sound familiar. Number nine has been a core lesson. For the first three years I was so afraid to share my writing that I used an alias for posting. It took me a long time (some years) before I was ready to show my writing to friends. I found out that the fears were unnecessary. So I encourage you to share sooner than I did. I hope you'll join Tuesdays.

  4. Congratulations! I hope your entire for Tuesdays. I sometimes find sharing once a week is a bit harder. I loose momentum. Your list rings true for me. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I might connect Tuesday Slicing with some other motivating thing - ie, chai tea in the morning!

    1. I just finished making 10 minilesson videos (ugh, state test prep) and it was too good not to use that bright yellow celebration paper :)

  9. I commented on your blog and would have never guessed that you were a first-time slicer. Come join us for Tuesdays. The group is a bit smaller then. Loved your learnings. It is hard on those zero comment days. I always have more ideas than I can use by about day 22 or so!

  10. Lisa, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'm sorry you had some zero comment days! I wish those who have zero would flash brightly on the Two Writing Teachers site, so you wouldn't have had zero comments! Hooray for #8! Tuesday is on your calendar. That's great. And yes, to #10--do think about other opportunities.

  11. Congrats on finishing the challenge! And yes, sometimes shorter slices are way more work. Isn't that always the way?

  12. I'm with Denise--I wish any post with zero comments would somehow be highlighted so we could all visit and comment! Every year I do this challenge I relearn #9--writing regularly means I have more ideas for writing. Who would have guessed!? I'm with you on Google calendar alerts to remember to slice during the rest of the year. I always have good intentions that I don't follow through on--mostly because I forget it's Tuesday.
